2 SPELLING BEES FROM JENNIFER BEMIS
***PLEASE READ AND RESPOND to Jennifer (jbeemer2@bellsouth.net) ASAP - THANKS!****

The first - Thursday, 17th.  The time: 10:20 - 11:00.

I (Jennifer) NEED to know who will be there this Thursday, the 17th at 10:20.  Please respond to this email and let me know one way or the other if your child is going to participate. Also, let me know if your child can not come Thursday but will be at the district bee on the 25th. I have to send in a registration form (this Thursday) for each child that will be going to the district bee.

The 2nd Spelling BEE:
**All of the children can ALSO participate in the district spelling bee  on January 25th at 1:00. Peaches Fink, in charge,is trying to reserve the conference room at the library on Grelot. I will let you know for sure as soon as I know. The fee to participate is $3 per child. Each participant will receive a "medallion". Fun and relaxed time with a small group participating.

Remember: When practicing at home, don't say letters twice that you only mean once.  Ex.  The pronouncer says "ribbon".  Child can't say: r, i, .......r,i,b,b,o,n.  All of the letters will count- that child spelled riribbon. He/she could say r, i, ...... STARTING OVER r,i,b,b,o,n.

Always say the word first, spell, then say again at the end. It is a good idea to ask for the definition, origin, and sentence. Study, study, study- and have fun! If you have questions, email me and I will try to get back to you quickly.

Thanks, Jennifer Bemis  jbeemer2@bellsouth.net

Medication and Children
FRONTLINE Presented "The Medicated Child" on PBS.

The program explored how in recent years, there's been a dramatic increase in the number of children being diagnosed with serious psychiatric disorders and prescribed medications that are just beginning to be tested in children. The drugs can cause serious side effects, and virtually nothing is known about their long-term impact. FRONTLINE producer Marcela Gaviria confronts psychiatrists, researchers and government regulators about the risks and benefits of prescription drugs for troubled children. The biggest current controversy surrounds the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Formerly called manic depression, bipolar disorder was long believed to exist only in adults, but, in the mid-1990s, bipolar in children began to be diagnosed at much higher rates, sometimes in kids as young as 4 years old.

FRONTLINE has launched a Web site where you can watch the program and read a full description. Here is the link to the Web site: http://www.pbs.org/frontline/medicatedchild
