Encouragement for the Homeschool Family Conference

You are invited to attend the Encouragement for the Homeschool Family Conference by the Steve and Teri Maxwell family (www.Titus2.com), to be held in Birmingham, Alabama, September 24th and 25th. Steve and Teri have been homeschooling since 1985, and they have eight children, five of whom have graduated from homeschooling and three who are still being homeschooled. Do you feel like you are running on a treadmill? Do you want to have sweet relationships with your children as they are growing up and not experience the heartache of rebellion and immorality? Do your children have greater purpose in life than just to have fun? Be challenged and find ways that God can set your family on a journey of spiritual unity, purpose, and direction.

The Encouragement for the Homeschool Family Conference will be held September 24th (7-9:30 p.m.) and 25th (9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.) at Hillview Baptist Church, 800 Heflin Ave. East, Birmingham, Alabama 35214. Dear Parents,

I have taught piano in Mobile for twelve years.  I currently teach a method created by Dr. Robert Pace of Columbia University.  This method provides a comprehensive approach to musical literacy.  Besides introducing your child to the piano, this program provides a foundation for future musical study.

I offer two sessions in the fall and two sessions in the spring.  Each session consists of six lessons.  Lessons are taught in groups of two.

Please contact me directly with questions.

Sincerely,

Jenny Kennedy

Junior Master Gardener (JMG)

Mark your calendar and plan to attend the 1st JMG meeting of the new club year, on August 4, 2010 @ 9:00 a.m. at the Jon Archer Agriculture Center.

We have just completed a very successful JMG 1st year and are gearing up for a new year. The August 4, 2010 meeting is a very important meeting to attend. We will be discussing officer and officer election, as well as planning our upcoming year. Invite a friend to join us. The JMG club is open to all youth ages 9-18 years old.

The Greater Gulf State Fair coming up in October offers the opportunity to enter an exhibit and earn some money for our club. We have to get busy fast getting that display planned.

There is work to do in the garden. We will be choosing what to plant and learning more about crop rotation.

Exciting opportunity awaits you. I look forward to seeing you and your friends on August 4, 2010 @ 9:00 a.m. at the Jon Archer Agriculture Center.

JMG OVERVIEW:

Gardening is one of America’s favorite pastimes. Grandparents, mothers, fathers and youth can participate in this creative, constructive activity to produce more than just beautiful flowers. Gardening gives people of all ages a place to play, experiment and enjoy the “fruits” of their labors. Growing fruits and vegetables in a home or community garden also provides an environment where health, nutrition, food safety and wise decision-making skills can be taught. Research shows that children will eat the food they grow.

JMG’S GOAL: To encourage 4-H’ers and volunteers to get their hands in the dirt, get involved and garden for better health and nutrition.

JMG’s objectives are to offer experiences where children are encouraged to:

·          Participate in plant selection

·          Learn about crop rotation

·          Prepare gardening plots

·          Plant, maintain, harvest, prepare and eat

·          Sample new foods and adopt the practice of eating new and different fruits and vegetables from their garden.

JMG requires a time commitment from 4-H’ers and volunteers. The garden is an ongoing project.

Homeschool.com is Now Adding Support Groups

We are writing because Homeschool.com is now adding support groups to our website and we’d like you to be included. We have been working diligently with our web designers to come up with a system so that you can add and update your contact information on our site, easily. In 5 easy steps you’ll be able to add your information on our website and keep your information up-to-date and current.

  1. To add your support group to the Homeschool.com website, please visit, http://www.homeschool.com/supportgroups/Register/new.asp.
  2. Once you register, you will receive an email message from us, asking you to verify your email address.
  3. Sign in and click on “Create a New Support Group”
  4. Add all of your information and click “save”
  5. You’re Done! The Homeschool.com staff will approve your group within one week.

We are also working to make the support group pages more user friendly by providing you access to local homeschooling vendors and resources.  These are local companies and individuals that can be an asset to your homeschooling endeavors.  This is an exceptional opportunity for ballet teachers, speech therapists, martial arts instructors, orthodontists, restaurants, tutors, etc. looking to reach out to homeschoolers like yourselves

If you know any company or individual that would like to reach out to homeschoolers, please let them know about this new opportunity. We’re asking your help with this because the more people and local companies that know about this, the more resources we can include for your benefit. We are also dividing states up geographically to make it easier to find and interact with support groups in your area. This will make it easier for homeschoolers to contact you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Ann Simpson

Spread the Word about Teen Leadership Camp

Dear Group Leader,

HSLDA’s Generation Joshua division is pleased to announce the dates for this year’s two iGovern programs! Please pass this information along to interested members and families within your organization.

iGovern is a weeklong leadership and worldview training camp that immerses young leaders ages 13–19 into a mock political environment, giving them hands-on experience in working within the legislative and executive branches of our government. There will be unique opportunities for them to:

  • Better understand a Christian’s role in and responsibility to government.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of Congress by drafting legislation, garnering support for that legislation, and passing bills.
  • Lobby for changes they want to see made in the mock political atmosphere.
  • Become engaged in a mock campaign by developing and rallying support for their agenda, engaging in fundraising efforts, debating opponents, and carrying out the responsibilities of the office.
  • Run for president or support a candidate for the position.
  • Hear practical advice from distinguished politicians who are currently working on Capitol Hill as well as influential political advocates.
  • View a list of confirmed speakers.

iGovern East will be held on the beautiful campus of Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia the week of June 27–July 3, 2010. Campers will go on a field trip to Washington, D.C. to visit some of our nation’s most historic monuments. They will also have the opportunity to hear from distinguished politicians and political advocates. Confirmed speakers for this year include Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America; Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia’s attorney general; and my personal friend Mike Farris, chairman of HSLDA and chancellor of Patrick Henry College. The registration deadline for attending iGovern East is June 15.

iGovern West will be held at Eagle Lake, near Colorado Springs, Colorado the week of August 15–21, 2010. Because of the scenic wilderness setting, campers will get to try their hand at archery and horseback riding! They will also hear from nationally recognized speakers. Currently, the list of speakers include Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy for Focus on the Family; Dr. David Nobel, founder and president of Summit Ministries; and Will Estrada, director of federal relations for HSLDA. The registration deadline for attending iGovern West is August 1.

The cost to attend iGovern (whether East or West) is $550. This includes lodging, food, transportation to and from the nearest airport if flying, and a staff-led field trip. But, HSLDA members—as well as those who are active/retired military or serving in full-time ministry-qualify for a special $100 discount, reducing the cost to $450. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity! Please visit the Generation Joshua website and click on East or West to register.

Sincerely,

J. Michael Smith
HSLDA President

Azalea Trail Maid Information

Dear Homeschool administrators:

We got one!  Thank you all for responding and letting us count your sophomore girls for our meeting with the Jaycees.  We were able to show them that the homeschool community is growing, is organized, and will work together in this endeavor.  As a result, starting fall of 2010, the Mobile Jaycees will let the Mobile homeschool community send at least one of our 11th grade girls, and an alternate, to interview for an Azalea Trail Maid position.

We need you to get the word out to your current sophomore girls to be considering this for next fall.  I am enclosing an application from a couple of years ago so they can be thinking about what will be expected of them.  This is not the application they will use in the fall.  Retta Franklin will have those available then.  (The application doesn’t say anything about the cost, but make sure any interested will know that the program is, unfortunately, expensive: about $10,000 to pay for the dress, trips, etc).

Also- and this part is VERY IMPORTANT- I will need a census of your junior girls just about as soon as you get them all registered.  The Jaycees gather their numbers from the schools on the first or second day of school, so I need to be prepared also.  If our population is big enough in proportion to the total population, we may be able to get more than one representative!

Feel free to contact me or Retta Franklin with any questions, comments, or suggestions (we could use suggestions).    Thank you again for your help- this is a great opportunity for all of our girls.

Dear Administrator,

Attached please find a memo from Dee Black, Senior Counsel at HSLDA representing the state of Alabama, concerning AL Senate Bill 347. Dee's memo describes HSLDA's opposition to our state raising the compulsory attendance age from 17 to 18.

CHEF is in total agreement with HSLDA's stand and ask that you join with us in making our voices heard - loudly - in opposing this bill.  Please pass this info along to your home schooling families so they, too, can be actively involved in stopping Senate Bill 347.

More information about this legislation is available at http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/AL/default.asp.

Thank you for your assistance,

Greetings,

My name is Mary Dawkins and I am a friend of Debbie Scott, a home school mother.  I attend St. Mark UMC at 439 Azalea Rd.

In 2006 St. Mark closed the school that we had run for years, but we have maintained the CHILDRENS LIBARAY.  It is a wonderful library for ages 3 through through 5th grade plus.  There are many biographies.  Every Tues. morning at 10:00 a.m. we have had the library open to Debbie and all her children to use and check out books.  They have had a wonderful time.  We would like for your group to also have this unique opportunity.  Please feel free to join us on Tues. mornings at 10:00 to see the library and have the children check out books.  Someone from the church is always there on that day to help with the process.  Several elementary school librarians have seen the facility and have been impressed with the content.

The library is located at the back of the property and is marked THE MALONE CENTER.  It is in the large parking lot.
You do not need to let me know you are coming, just come and enjoy. Hope to see you there.  We want the facility to be used.

We also still have some textbooks left from the school and would love to have you look at them and see what you might be able to use.  There are also some student desks and chairs available.  All of these are for VERY reduced prices.
